In the summer of 2006, the Archbishop of York completed a week-long vigil of fasting and prayer for a lasting peace in the Middle East, pitching a tent in York Minster.  Bishop Mouneer of Egypt joined the Archbishop for a week long vigil in 2014.

Throughout the prayers, the Archbishop encouraged individuals to have a white linen cloth at hand to serve as a reminder of peace.

The Archbishop prayed for the release of the BBC journalist Alan Johnston and held a vigil for the people of Zimbabwe. He has also completed a parachute jump raising funds for the Afghanistan Trust and has spoken out against acts of terrorism.
